A Good Yarn

Although I am on a deadline for about a million things, ie: the Fab Fair is in 2 weeks and I need some stock to sell----I found myself in receipt of yet more fleece and rovings and spinning my butt off. Why do I want to spin?

  • It's a new experience
  • It relaxes me
  • You can't make any mistakes
  • It empties my mind
  • It's like yoga (without lululemon pants and perspiration)
Happy, happy, happy and so without further ado, I will post my yarn porn pics.

Felt So Good

The best days are when you happen by a Salvation Army Thrift store and find, not one, but three incredible sweaters --just waiting for upcycling ---a new life. Inspired by my fuzzy felted lambswool treat, I spun a ridiculous ball of wool, completely made up of scraps of fleece in all colours ---VOILA ...a neck warmer and a hat together in perfect harmony ...okay I realize the colours are are a bit much, but it works.

I've listed it up on my etsy site for custom finishing. I think someone will really love it.

I am working on another piece right now, but I'm doing a bit of spinning while I am working on the layout for the next one.

The yarn I am spinning is called peas and carrots...Not sure what I'll do with it when it's done but you'll be the first to know.

I can't "kelp"myself!

With the fiddlehead ferns out of the way, it was time to move closer to the water.....Sea creatures...one suctioned to the hat and the other with tendrils moving away from the hat.

Intriguing for design, this is what I love the most, blending knitting and crochet. I am working a little series of 10 and then I will move on....At last count this morning I was on number 5...wish me luck...

Although I already have some grades of grey, white and black in the works......Variagated is the theme of the day...whatever I want to make has to be in the variagated Super 10 that landed in an enormous box on my front porch last week.

What to do with the pink?

Breathe in the Creative

On the way to Judy's last night for our long awaited knitting night, I walked right by this gorgeous little forested enclave. How exciting...I stopped, pulled out my knitting and sat on the grass. These rocks looked like a group of sea lions laying on rocks, not the stones themselves. Cool, enjoy the sun, sit and stay a while.

I don't take as much advantage of knitting outdoors. I should, I'm self employed dammit...The inspiration is not just what comes from inside.

The evening was wonderful (as usual), the knitting fruitful as we talked technique.

Toni's project

A gorgeous baby blanket in Mission Falls Cotton.....in non pink and blue baby colours.

Judy's project

An incredible natural alpaca blend cabled scarf from One Skein.

And me....

Interpretive reproduction of the Fiddle Head Ferns opening up on the treck to Judys...I love the way the ferns unfurl. Here are two of my new fern designs in baby size.

Describe "Design"

You start with a fabulous ball of yarn, push it right up to your face, roll it in your hands like a ball of dough and finally, cuddle it like a new baby....

All the while thinking, what will I do with you?. That is the beginning, but where -----from there?

Lately, I have been craving a certain freedom that I find only in crochet. Don't get me wrong, knitting does it for me in a big way, but just recently I haven't been able to commit to anything but the wool and I'm just trying to "feel it"

The result was a wonderfully liberating week of scarfs, flowing, twisting, flying off the hook. Although the experience was a bit scary at first. For me it's always been about hats, scarves have always been weird rectangles. Now I finally have a scarf that suits my design sensibility --quirky--.

So that was my week of design...I'll post a few of the scarf pics so you can have a peek. Let's talk about design, what gets your juices flowing?
